Zoom Portrait Series
In February, 2021 I began painting portraits with a group of artists based out of Toronto through Zoom.
One thing I noticed right away during the start of the pandemic was the absence of the presence of strangers in my day-to-day life. I quite suddenly felt the absence of people who I might see at the coffee shop or grocery store while moving about my daily activities. Chance encounters seemed a thing of the past, and making art felt equally challenging in this new context.
In the beginning of 2021, however, a Toronto artist I met through Instagram invited me to join their weekly drawing group through Zoom. I began to look forward to Sunday afternoons, when I would get to see new people, draw, learn about them, and enjoy their company.
After our sessions I returned to many of the studies, and as I finished each painting I thought about the value of face time and of these connections. Nearly every week since then, we have met to practice portraiture, taking turns to model, draw, and share with each other.
The paintings on this page are a sample of the work I've completed on this project.
